Why and How should we celebrate this unsung hero?

Why?

Although she didn’t actually fly or build any rocket ships for NASA, Katherine Johnson made revolutionary calculations that originally have been deemed impossible and she overcame obstacles that limited her rights and capabilities because of the color of her skin and her gender. She is also a Trailblazer in STEM and has inspired many women to pursue their dreams.

How?

There are two good ways to celebrate this hero. One good way would be to include her in a segment in Black History month where we at least recognize her. Another way we as a society could celebrate this hero is to give her her own national holiday on February 20th, the day her calculations were used to send the first American to orbit the world.
